Sometimes I amaze myself. I was talking to a friend on the phone and she mentioned how excited she was that the Stampin' Up! stamps in the mini catalogs are DIECUT!! I remembered that I had heard something about saving the paper backing sheets and/or the rubber sheet from the die cut sets and using them as templates.
Here is a short tutorial on how to do it!!
Here I have stamped an image from the Snowburst stamp set in Night of Navy ink. You can see the paper backing sheet in this picture.
Place the paper backing over your stamped image. You can use some Dotto if you like to help it stay in place.
I used a Stampin' Sponge (I cut mine into quarters) to apply a lighter shade of ink over the stamped image in the "template". You could also use the Spong Daubers. I used Bordering Blue ink for the shadow.
Remove the template and you have just added a shadowed image that is just like the stamped image. Another way to do two-step Stampin'!!
Finished card, I used a Build-A-Brad, Night of Navy Grosgrain Ribbon and Elastic Cord from the Holiday Mini.
Happy Stampin'

Ooh, that really is a good idea - and it would also be fairly easy to create a template if there were a particular image that you were planning to use a lot. Thanks so much for sharing!
